Jamie Carragher is confident Liverpool can retain their Premier League title this season if they can resolve one key problem.
Carragher believes another Premier League title is within Liverpool’s reach should they sign a center-back in January.
The Reds have got off to a decent start in their title defense by winning five of their opening games (D2 L1) to sit third in the standings and only a point behind leaders Leicester City.
Losing Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez to long-term injuries, however, has left Liverpool short of defensive cover. Joel Matip and Nathaniel Phillips are their only natural center-half options left. Although Fabinho should be able to chip in once he recovers from a hamstring injury.
“I think if Liverpool buy a center-back, and a good one, in January, I think they’ll take some stopping, I really do,” Carragher told Punching.TV.
“Defensively, they have injury problems in that position (centre-back), and if they rectify that in January, I think Liverpool would be my favourites.
“But right now I think it’s 50/50 between them and Man City because of Liverpool’s injuries and the setback of Van Dijk.”
Reports have linked Dayot Upamecano, Kalidou Koulibaly, and Ben White with moves to Anfield in the January transfer window.
But, even if Jurgen Klopp finds a new center-back, Carragher doubts they’ll win in such convincing fashion as last season.
The Reds legend added: “I just don’t think there’ll be as big a gap between them (Liverpool and City) and the rest as we’ve seen in the last couple of years.”
Liverpool will return to action on November 22 to welcome Leicester to Anfield for a Premier League match.
