During a recent interview, one of South America’s biggest legends came out to give his two cents on the Messi vs Maradona debate.
The Messi vs Maradona debate will never have a clear winner out of the two Argentines. One of South America’s biggest legends is Jose Luis Chilavert, the Paraguay former goalkeeper who played against Diego during his prime. It’s well-known that the former star aligns with Messi whenever they ask him about the two. Contrary to any person born in Argentina before the ‘90s, Chilavert doesn’t play around when he talks about Leo.
In his view, the Barcelona star surpasses Diego Maradona as the best player in football history. To him, there is absolutely no contest. An opinion that nobody in Argentina likes, but his defense makes a lot of sense when you take a closer look at his angle. Chilavert thinks all the criticism against Leo is completely unfair in his own country.
Chilavert thinks Messi is far better than Diego.
Chilavert said the following on TyC Sports: “Messi is a genius, he is on another planet. The rest of us are from earth, that is the truth. When his father went to knock on Newell’s and River Plate’s door for his growth hormone treatment, everybody turned their backs on him. Barcelona trusted him and Messi grew as a player after that. His family and Messi made a tremendous sacrifice and he was stronger. Messi is a leader.
“Many understand leadership as yelling or insulting. But there are leaders who are quiet, they speak inside the dressing room and during practice. To me, that is called being a leader. People unfairly say he has no love for Argentina because he’s never won the World Cup. That’s where comparisons begin.
“Maradona didn’t even win 1% of what Messi won. What about all the Ballon d’Or trophies? Then they say the excuse that Messi played next to Xavi, Iniesta, and the rest of that team. Leo is a genius and he is above the rest. Our society is very unfair because they will say anything to him.”
