A shocking new video has emerged offering a new twist to Ballon d’Or history in terms of the total number of points accumulated.
France Football has awarded the most impressive players in a calendar year a Ballon d’Or since 1956. It’s undeniably become the most converted prize in football. In the eyes of many, it’s a sign of where one truly stands amongst his peers.
In between Luka Modric’s triumph in 2018, however, it’s been exclusively a two-way contest between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo since 2008.
Messi broke the deadlock between them last year by winning a record sixth Ballon d’Or, leaving Ronaldo behind on five. For many fans, this proves the Barcelona star’s superiority in terms of their levels of greatness.
According to YouTube channel StatsTube, however, Ronaldo has accumulated a far greater number of points (3,601) compared to Messi (2,961) for nominations in the award’s history from 1956 to 2019.
Modric is a surprise, albeit very distant, third on 837 points ahead of his Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane (715).
While Virgil van Dijk, who is the only non-winner of the Ballon d’Or in this top 10 list, came home a surprise fifth 679 points after finishing runner-up to Messi in 2019.
