After Cristiano Ronaldo’s positive Covid-19 test, new information from UEFA just confirmed our worst fears about his next two weeks.
Our worst fears about Cristiano Ronaldo might come to pass after knowing details of a rule by UEFA. The Portugal international will most likely miss the UEFA Champions League match against FC Barcelona. We were already trying to make sense of the recent news of his condition and the repercussions.
Some new information just emerged about Cristiano’s next steps. They will effectively prevent him from playing the next two matches of his favorite competition. As the UEFA protocol dictates, any infected player needs to present evidence of a negative test. It needs to happen at least seven days before the match he wants to play. Ronaldo tested positive on October 13.
The Italian law forces him to isolate for the next 10 days, which leaves him five days short of completing that rule from UEFA. This new information pretty much confirms Ronaldo is set to miss the first confrontation against Lionel Messi on October 28.
Ronaldo’s only chance to play vs Barcelona.
There’s still a beacon of hope for Cristiano Ronaldo. He would have to test negative at least twice by October 21 and present the proper documentation to UEFA. This means that Cristiano would have to defeat the virus in record time, before any other athlete has done until now. However, CR7 is one of the few athletes who can accomplish this difficult feat.
The UEFA protocol is very specific about this: “Participants from Group 1 or Group 2 who have verified confirmation that they have now recovered from the virus are invited to submit documentation of this to the UPAP. This includes the date of diagnosis of the virus. Complete relevant medical history and any other medical documents in this context e.g. SARS-CoV-2-RNA test or any other laboratory tests,” reads the protocol published by UEFA. “This must be provided at least one week before the team’s next UEFA Match.”
