Today we celebrate the 83rd birthday of Manchester United and England legend Sir Robert ‘Bobby’ Charlton by taking a brief look back on the player’s career story.
Bobby Charlton is regarded as one of the greatest footballers in history, having won the 1966 World Cup with England and the Ballon d’Or itself later that year.
The former midfielder spent the bulk of his career at Manchester United between 1956 and 1973. He made a then-club record of 758 appearances and 249 goals, which were later broken by Ryan Giggs and Wayne Rooney respectively decades later.
Charlton, in particular, became renown for his attacking and passing abilities in his career. He wasn’t immune to a long-range screamer either, and won plaudits for his level of fitness back in the day.
The now 83-year-old also famously captained United to the European Cup in 1968, as part of the 12 trophies won in Manchester.
After retiring in the 70s, Charlton had a brief spell coaching Preston North End before becoming a director with Wigan Athletic. He returned to United in 1984 as a member of the board of directors and remains one to this day.
Everyone here on Ace Football wishes the England and Red Devils legend all the best on his special day.
