In a bizarre turn of events on Wednesday morning, Manchester City appear to have lost millions of followers on social media.
Manchester City were left stunned after their Twitter account disappeared briefly on Wednesday morning.
It is not clear what caused the sudden disappearance of the account, which runs off the Twitter handle @ManCity. However, it was not deleted by Twitter themselves.
A default Twitter message which appeared on Wednesday morning reads on the club’s profile page: “This account doesn’t exist”. Some claim the account was suspended while another set of reports claim it was a mistake from the club’s social media camp.
Manchester City were notified about the whole thing and quickly fixed the issue. But it came at a price.
City’s account was followed by more than 8.5m accounts, making it the fifth-most followed club in the Premier League.
After this whole saga, it appears they lost over 5m followers initially. Although, their follower count has continued to go back somewhere close to the original over the past hour. At the time of writing, it has been restored back to 7.9m followers.
Access to the account was restored shortly after midday, with the club saying that the outage was due to a technical error with Twitter.
Manchester City saw the lighter side of the issue and also made a tweet after the issue was restored.
It remains to be seen whether they’ll get back their original follower count and that could be a loss for the Citizens.
