Monchi denies Manchester City is close to Jules Kounde

As we go through the summer transfer window, Sevilla’s Monchi denied Manchester City is close to signing Jules Kounde any time soon.

In recent days we saw reports from Manchester City’s interest in signing Jules Kounde from Sevilla. The latest from a line of very talented French players are currently playing under Julen Lopetegui and several clubs want him. Kounde won the most recent Europa League title against Inter Milan. He is set to start against Bayern Munich in the European Supercup.

This is a player who is considered amongst the most interesting centre-backs in the world at the moment. Pep Guardiola decided to make a €55 million offer to Sevilla but it was rejected by the Spanish club. The Sky Blue team is currently looking for defenders that can help them win the title that has eluded them forever: the UEFA Champions League. Pep believes that players like Kounde can make that happen.

However, Sevilla doesn’t look interested in selling one of their most promising talents right now. Perhaps they will change their mind after the UEFA Supercup.

Monchi doesn’t like the idea.

Although reports from the English media suggested that Guardiola reached terms with the player, the club denied such claims. The Sevilla sporting director is one of the most important figures in the club’s transfer activity over the last 20 years. Monchi is the one who calls the shots when they have to make a decision over a player and Kounde is no different.

“I doubt very much that Kounde has reached an agreement with City, because he has a contract with Sevilla,” Monchi said on Marca.

“I already said that he has not reached an agreement with City. It is true that Jules attracted interest from a club in recent days. They have sent us an offer that has been assessed by the management committee and was turned down.

“If they come back, we would listen to them again and respond to them. It is not something that worries us because, knowing Kounde, he is thinking more about [Robert] Lewandowski, [Leroy] Sane, [Thomas] Muller and [Serge] Gnabry.”
