Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu remains under scalding water as votes of no confidence against him and his board reached 7,500 signatures.

Bartomeu’s reign as Barcelona president has reached rock-bottom following a first trophyless season since 2007/08, resulting in Lionel Messi handing in a transfer request last month.

But while the Catalan put the brakes on any summer exit for Messi, his relationship with the club’s star player is fractured beyond repair. Therefore, Victor Font and several other prominent figures have called for resignation.

A motion of no confidence has been made against Bartomeu’s board of directors following this ugly turn of events.

The movement, called ‘Mes que una Mocio’ (‘More than a Motion’), is supported by the likes of Font, Lluis Fernandez-Ala, and Jordi Farre – who are all candidates for the upcoming presidential elections on March 2021.

And on Tuesday morning, it was announced on the ‘Mes que una Mocio’ Twitter page that 7,500 signatures had been gathered against Bartomeu and his board.

The overall number of signatures required to take the movement to the next level is at 16,520, with a deadline set for September 17. This will amount to around 15% of the electoral register.

The hope is to install a new board with a plan to restore Barcelona’s former glory before the end of the year; which is when Messi can begin talks with non-Spanish clubs regarding a summer transfer.
