Manchester United are lining up a bid for Burnley’s Dwight McNeil as an alternative to their pursuit of Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho.
McNeil failed to come through the Old Trafford youth system and has never got the chance to prove himself at a senior level at Manchester United.
He instead left for Burnley in 2014, only to establish himself as one of the hottest properties in the Premier League six years on.
Known for his tricky feet and pinpoint crossing ability, the 20-year-old winger performer in all 38 top-flight matches for the Clarets in 2019/20.
McNeil’s tally of two goals and six assists provided has been enough to invite the interest from Leicester City, Wolves, AC Milan, and Juventus.
But, as per Lancs Live, Manchester United are ready to challenge the abovementioned sides to bring the highly-rated youngster back to base.
McNeil, of course, remains a back-up option to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s efforts to snap up Jadon Sancho.
Solskjaer sees the English starlet as United’s marquee signing for this transfer window.
However, the Red Devils have so far been unable to persuade Dortmund to lower their staggering £108million asking price.
With the ongoing saga continuing to drag on, Manchester United are exploring other options, and the one involving McNeil may be just the right one.
The youngster has been flourishing at Turf Moor despite Burnley’s style of play.
McNeil has been so impressive for Sean Dyche’s men that the Clarets are now demanding around £50million to sanction his departure.
It’s still uncertain whether he’d be able to secure a place in Solskjaer’s starting eleven.
The Norwegian already has a potent attacking trio, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, and Mason Greenwood occupying the three positions higher up the pitch.
