In rather surprising fashion, Real Madrid skipper Sergio Ramos has urged Lionel Messi to remain at Barcelona.
For a player like Lionel Messi, it’s no surprise to see him getting support from all over.
His future at Barca remains in doubt following his transfer request to the club last Tuesday.
Messi did not turn up for COVID-19 testing or participate in training as he no longer seems himself as a Barcelona employee.
The Argentina superstar’s father headed to the club on Wednesday for showdown talks with president Josep Maria Bartomeu.
In normal circumstances, this should be a development pleasing to the ears of the Real Madrid camp. Except that, they realise what Messi’s exit could mean on many fronts.
It might weaken Barcelona for a while but it could be a long-lasting blow for Spanish football. Hugo Sanchez also echoed those thoughts much recently.
Sergio Ramos says Messi has the right to dictate his future but hopes his rival remains in La Liga.
“It’s something that we’re not focused on but the player has earned the right to be able to decide on his future,” Ramos said as quoted by Goal.
“Having said that, for the Spanish game and for Barca and for the rest of us, we’d like him to stay as we always want the best around.”
Ramos approaches the final year of his contract at Real Madrid and also spoke on his future at the club.
“I’ve spent years with Real Madrid and never really contemplated leaving and am confident that we’ll reach a mutually suitable arrangement. My focus is now on preparing for a solid season ahead.”
It’s safe to say more than most want Messi to remain at Barcelona. We’ll have to see how that plays out.
