City’s chief executive Ferran Soriano and director of football Txiki Begiristain once worked at Barcelona. They will attempt to use their links with the Spanish giants to pull off a move for Messi.
Guardiola is also keen on a re-union with his former player during his time as Barca boss.
The issue of the finances involved is still somewhat unclear at the moment. Manchester City hope to get Messi for free or for a very ‘minimal’ amount. On the other hand, Barcelona want nothing but the €700m release clause for arguably the best player in their history.
Once again, it remains to be seen how it all ends but City currently fancy their chances of Messi at the Etihad stadium.
