Neymar is already on ‘par’ with the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. This is according to ex-PSG manager Luis Fernandez.
Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are usually classed in a league of their own. But just maybe Neymar is already getting to that level.
The Brazilian has undeniable talent but is yet to live up to the holy grail of individual awards.
Neymar has come close to winning the Ballon d’Or twice, finishing third on two occasions. No one can blame him for not going all the way if there is a certain duo of Messi and Ronaldo around the corner.
But with both players above entering the twilight of their careers, many would expect the PSG superstar to now make that award his own.
Ex-PSG player and manager Luis Fernandez knows one or two about working with Ballon d’Or winners. He worked with Ronaldinho during his stint at PSG.
Fernandez has now tipped Neymar to lift the Ballon d’Or in the nearest future, with the player looking top of his game at the moment.
“I’ve always loved Neymar, and I already loved him when he was at Barca with Messi and [Luis] Suarez. I had the opportunity to appreciate his coordination, his body language, his ease and his technique.” Fernandez told Goal.
“I had Ronaldinho as a player for PSG. The first year, he was exceptional in training and in matches. The second year, he wanted to do something else, but you fall under the spell of this kind of player. Sometimes we want to copy them, but we can’t.”
“What Neymar does technically is exceptional. We saw Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Neymar is of this calibre.”
PSG would indeed hope Neymar can deliver all of the expected promise when they take on Bayern Munich on Sunday. It would be the first ever Champions League final for the French giants. A victory could well go on to re-define their history among top European sides.
