Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez has been linked with Chelsea and he added fuel to speculations linking him with the Blues.
Chelsea have been impressive under Frank Lampard. They attack in droves and have a youthful exuberance in them.
They are not without flaws. Saying that the Blues are poor at the back is an understatement. Out of the teams in top half of the Premier League table, they had the worst defensive record.
It hurt them as Manchester United stole a march on them and secured third place in the points table.
Chelsea need defensive reinforcements and Jose Gimenez is on of the names mentioned. The Atletico Madrid defender has not talked about his future but coyly hinted at his admiration for Frank Lampard.
The Uruguay international shared that Lampard was his idol growing up. He further added he loved how Chelsea played earlier in the decade and how he would wake up early in the morning to watch them.
“I really liked Frank Lampard when I was a kid,” Marca quoted Gimenez when the Uruguyan was asked who his idol was.
“In Uruguay, they played the Premier League early in the morning and I always watched it, I loved the way he played.
“I would have liked to play with him, I loved that Chelsea.”
If this is not stating intent then what is? Chelsea would love to have Gimenez in their ranks. He would add leadership and authority in their backline, solidifying their porous defense.
