It wouldn’t be a surprise for Michael Essien if Lyon knock Bayern Munich out of the Champions League, given the one-legged nature of the tie.

Wednesday night awaits a match-up between two very exciting teams as Bayern Munich are set to clash against Olympique Lyon in the semi-finals of the Champions League.

Usually, there are two rounds of one fixture, home and away, and the aggregate score is considered. But the rules had to be tweaked to introduce one-off ties in the knockout stages of this season’s competition due to the coronavirus risk.

Bayern are the favorites to win the upcoming match and also ultimately lift the trophy.

Lyon, on the other hand, look a little out of place. But that is not to say that their achievement is well deserved as they beat the mighty Manchester City to reach this stage.

And Michael Essien, who won two Ligue 1 titles during his stay at Lyon, believes his former team could surprise the German champions.

“It’s possible [for Lyon to win], especially in this one-off tournament format. Anything can happen in 90 minutes so you can’t rule them out,” stated Essien, speaking to TV3.

“In the Champions League, they have the same old traits of hard work, belief, and good organization. They play to their strengths regardless of the opposition and that’s why they are doing so well.”
