Muller: 'The next game Bayern Munich start at 0-0'

Thrashing Barcelona 8-2 was a ‘big statement’ that matters no more once Bayern Munich begin their next game, says two-goal hero Thomas Muller.

A Muller brace helped Bayern Munich humiliate Barcelona through a rampant 8-2 victory in their Champions League quarter-final clash to book a spot in the last four in Lisbon.

The German was untraceable, brilliant with his passes, and most importantly clinical in front of goal. It made him the man of the match with two goals and an assist to his name.

Muller opened the scoreline in the opening four minutes by playing a one-two with Robert Lewandowski in the build-up to his goal. After a David Alaba own goal, Ivan Perisic fired Bayern back into the lead.

Serge Gnabry added a fourth goal before Muller score from the near-post to put Bayern into a 4-1 into the break. And while Luis Suarez poked one back for Barcelona, Hansi Flick’s men responded in emphatic fashion.

A brilliant Alphonso Davies delivery allowed Joshua Kimmich to restore Bayern’s three-goal advantage. Lewandowski then scored a header before Philippe Coutinho’s brace finished Barcelona.

“Thanks for the man of match trophy – maybe we have 12 to 15 players who deserve it. We worked so hard and have this intensity. It’s tough to beat us. It was so much fun today.

“For our style of players it doesn’t matter about the names of players we are facing. When someone presses and dribbles, it’s not a problem. Then we catch the ball and have so much talent in the offensive line.

“We feel good, but now we have to be quiet and regenerate.

“This is a big statement but the next game we start at 0-0. The statement doesn’t matter. The other teams will watch our game and they can be impressed or not. We start at 0-0 and have to win the next game.

“Today we have to be very happy. After we wake up and answer the messages on the phone then we have to focus.

“I know about these tournament situations. Most of the time after the big wins (he played in the 7-1 win over Brazil at the 2014 World Cup) it’s difficult.”
