The Blues suffered their first defeat of the season at Elland Road.
Leeds United defeated Chelsea 3-0 in their Premier League game on Sunday. A thrilling game saw the Peacocks claim a superb win at their home stadium.
Last season flashbacks for Chelsea?
Chelsea started the game by pushing for an early win as they put pressure on Leeds’ backline from both flanks.
Raheem Sterling opened the scoring for the Blues early on, but the referee ruled out the goal for offside.
Chelsea continued their attacks as they kept on dominating the possession. However, an unbelievable blunder from Edouard Mendy changed the course of the game in the 33rd minute.
Having received a back-pass inside the six-yard box, Mendy took too long on the ball, giving enough time to Brenden Aaronson to nick to nick it off his toes and make it 1-0 for the hosts.
Leeds looked much better after scoring the first goal, continuing their impressive pressing in midfield. Only four minutes after Aaronson’s opener, Rodrigo Moreno doubled his side’s lead with a fantastic header.
Chelsea created a host of chances to get back into the game at the beginning of the second period. They came close to scoring several times while Leeds looked more and more dangerous on the counter-attacks.
A Daniel James cross from the left-hand side found Rodrigo, whose touch was enough to provide a perfect chance for Jack Harrison from close range. The Leeds winger then poked the ball past Mendy to make it 3-0 in the 69th minute.
Chelsea made several more attempts to score after Harrison’s goal. However, their attacks only provided more space for Leeds’ counter-attacks.
Kalidou Koulibaly pulled Joe Gelhardt down after a quick run in the 84th minute, convincing the referee to send him off with a second yellow card.
The Blues must prepare to host Leicester City in their next league game on Saturday.
