The Catalans suffered relegation to the Europa League for the second consecutive season.

Xavi Hernandez has insisted Barcelona’s hierarchy fully supports his rebuild project despite their recent Champions League setback.

Inter’s 4-0 win over Viktoria Plzen ended Barcelona’s dreams of qualifying for UCL’s knockout stage. But the Catalans were not able to redeem any pride when they lost 3-0 against Bayern later on.

Another heavy home defeat against the Bavarians mounted more pressure on Xavi. But the Spaniard is not concerned about his future at the club.

“We will not stop working and I notice total confidence in the project. It is not what we expected,” Xavi said on Friday.

“We have very high expectations and we have lost the Champions League. We are not in a good situation, we have to put up with the criticism and continue working.

“Patience and calm. I have the trust of the president, the board, Mateu and Jordi. I have no choice but to continue working”.

Asked whether the Champions League elimination has convinced Barca to look for more signings this January, he added: “It is still very early. It is true that the football management is working, but there is still a long way to go”.
