Timo Werner believes Chelsea are still a work in progress and doesn’t expect any title challenges this season as a result.

Expectations are higher than ever for Chelsea this season following a massive squad overhaul, with over €200m spent on signing big-names in Werner, Kai Havertz, Hakim Ziyech, and Ben Chilwell. They also welcomed Thiago Silva and Malang Sarr on free transfers.

Although Werner and Havertz were the only two signings available in the Blues’ 3-1 win over Brighton in last week’s Premier League opener.

The pair had mixed fortunes in the game, with Werner undeniably enjoying the more impressive debut. ‘Turbo Timo’ didn’t get on the scoresheet but troubled the Brighton defense all the same. He delivered a lively performance, especially in the first-half, and won the penalty that led to Jorginho’s opening goal.

Despite a promising start, however, the 24-year-old isn’t expecting any overnight miracles in west London.

Werner accepts that Chelsea have a long way to go yet after finishing last season 33 points behind Premier League champions Liverpool, whom he hopes to emulate in the upcoming years.

“We have to be honest with ourselves and say that we probably won’t win the Premier League or the Champions League this season,” Timo told Bild.

“If it works anyway, all the nicer. But that’s not what the club expects.

“As I said, I like to compare that to Liverpool a few years ago. In the first year, the team didn’t win a title either. In the second year they were in the Champions League final, in the third they won it and in the fourth, the title in the Premier League followed.

“With our Chelsea project, too, we want to develop step by step so that we have greater chances for the title after each season.”

Perhaps Werner will reconsider this stance if the Blues beat Liverpool this evening?
