The Red Devils are going strong in the title charge, having produced a brilliant turnaround after starting the season on the wrong foot.

Harry Maguire insists there are “a lot of leaders” in the Manchester United squad with Bruno Fernandes, Nemanja Matic, Juan Mata, David de Gea, and Axel Tuanzebe all having leadership qualities.

Eyebrows were raised when Maguire was handed the captain’s armband after Ashley Young’s departure to Inter Milan last season.

Those questioning the management’s decision brought forward the €90 million defender’s struggles with club and country at the time and the fact that he had only been a member of the United squad for a very short while.

At the start of the season, a few claimed that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side was incapable of challenging for the league crown due to the lack of talismanic figures in the team.

The doubts have now been silenced as Manchester United sit atop the Premier League table with a two-point lead over second-placed Manchester City and a six-point lead over champions Liverpool.

“We have a lot of leaders in the dressing room, a lot of senior pros,” Maguire told United’s official podcast.

“And you don’t have to be a senior pro to be a leader. Axel [Tuanzebe] is a leader, in the ways that he works and speaks in the dressing room. And he’s only a young boy, he’s still learning his trade – I’m sure he’ll go on to have an unbelievable career.

“There’s Bruno, who has come in and made a massive impact at the club, results-wise but also off the field. His mentality – it rubs off on other people when you have a strong mentality, a winning mentality.

“Nemanja, Juan, David – they’ve been at the club a while now. There’s definitely a lot of leaders in the dressing room.”
