Chelsea overcame the challenge of La Viola to secure the services of Thiago Silva on a free transfer once his PSG contract came to an end.

Thiago Silva will turn 36 next month. He was playing in the Champions League final for PSG and the Parisians wanted him to stick around.

Chelsea came around with an enticing project and Silva said yes to sign for them. Frank Lampard’s offensive outlet will finally have a calm head at the back.

The Blues were not the only team in the running for his services. Fiorentina were also linked. However, it seems that was more of a product of the rumor mill rather than a concrete linkage.

Silva’s agent Paulo Tonietto has shared that he was in contact with La Viola months ago and did not have detailed conversations with the Serie A side.

“They contacted us once, but months ago,” Football Italia quoted the agent.

“But we didn’t speak about numbers or other situations.”

“I can tell you that I don’t even remember the name of the sporting director at Fiorentina, the one who called me.”

“But I can tell you that another Italian side were interested in Thiago and it wasn’t even Milan.”

A lot is expected from Silva at the Stamford Bridge. Chelsea do not sign outfield players over the age of 30 but they made an exception for the Brazilian defender.
