The managerial office at St James’ Park is currently vacant, and Ten Hag’s name is said to be on the shortlist of Newcastle’s new owners.

Erik Ten Hag has brushed aside rumors linking him with the Newcastle United job and asserts his “focus has to be on performing with Ajax.”

Newcastle United’s first move after entering into a new era following their £300 million Saudi-backed takeover was the dismissal of Steve Bruce.

Ten Hag is understood to be a subject of interest for the Magpies’ new owners. The Dutchman has earned many admirers for his exploits with Ajax, having led them to two Eredivisie titles, a few other honors, and to the Champions League semi-finals in 2019.

Quizzed whether he’s interested in managing Newcastle, Ten Hag told the press (via Football Oranje): “I’m not into that. Now is not the time for that either.

“We are growing as a team during the season. I expect my players to do just that. Then the trainer has to set a good example.

“The focus has to be on performing with Ajax, that’s the most important thing. Peripheral matters, rumours, et cetera, not.”
