In an interview on Twitch, Luis Suarez revealed Barcelona ignored his advice to sign his compatriot Darwin Nunez when he was still relatively cheap.

Luis Suarez has disclosed that he urged Barcelona to sign Darwin Nunez back when the striker was still at Almeria.

A season in the Spanish second division in 2019/20 saw Nunez score 16 goals in 30 games. At that time, he won a call-up to the Uruguayan national team. It was there Suarez saw what he could do first hand and was impressed enough to recommend him to Barcelona.

But the Catalan giants ignored his advice and paid the price recently when they fell to a 3-0 Champions League defeat to Benfica, a game in which Nunez played a starring role by scoring twice.

Had Barcelona only listened, Suarez believes the debt-ridden club could’ve paid around €15-20 million for a player he believes is worth around €100 million in today’s market.

Speaking to Spanish journalist Gerard Romero on Twitch, the Uruguayan said: “When I was at Almeria, I said it at Barcelona. They ask me and I said ‘take care of this one (Nunez), he has very interesting things …’, but they answered ‘no, he’s at Almeria, he’s very young.’”

“But instead of paying now 80, 90 or 100 million, they would have paid 15 or 20.

“To have him as a substitute for Luis Suarez, but he is a player who needs to strengthen.”

Suarez also revealed how Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman told him he was no longer needed at Camp Nou last year.
