A substandard showing by the Red Devils resulted in their chances of securing a silverware further slim down.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer pointed out a Manchester United problem “that needs addressing” after they crashed out of Carabao Cup.

Solskjaer fielded an entirely different team against West Ham on Wednesday night to the one that had beaten them in the Premier League only three days ago.

The Norwegian manager’s decision didn’t pay off as United, who were missing the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Paul Pogba, Raphael Varane and Harry Maguire, put in a subpar performance and were largely ineffective going forward.

A sole goal proved enough for the Hammers to claim a victory and proceed to the fourth round of the Carabo Cup.

“It was a poor start again, that needs addressing,” Solskjaer told Sky Sports after the full-time whistle.

“After that we played well for long periods and gave it a good go. Stats don’t mean anything but when you’ve got 27 shots you know the boys have given it a good go.

“We didn’t create big chances but we created pressure. Mason Greenwood had a big chance but sometimes that pressure doesn’t come to anything. Of course, in the last few minutes we had to go gung-ho and they could have scored another.

“You want to go through but it’s a long season. Everyone gave it a good go. I can’t fault their attitude.”
