Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is hopeful Paul Pogba may return for Manchester United’s season opener against Crystal Palace after testing positive for COVID-19.

Pogba was unfortunately tested positive for COVID-19 late last month, causing him to withdraw from France’s Nations League squad.

The midfielder then self-isolated in compliance with the health regulations which prevented him from training. Therefore, he lost valuable fitness and sharpness ahead of the new season.

But pictures emerged on Friday afternoon showing Pogba back in training alongside the rest of his United teammates, with Solskjaer now hopeful he’ll be able to count on him for the club’s Premier League opener against Crystal Palace on September 19.

Although the Red Devils boss ruled out any chance of Pogba featuring in Saturday’s friendly with Aston Villa.

“Paul’s had a couple of training sessions, so he’s lost out on a few sessions because of the virus, of course,” Solskjaer told MUTV.

“But Paul is quick to get fit…. hopefully, he’ll be ready for next weekend. I am not 100 per cent sure, though.”

However, Luke Shaw continues to make positive progress from the ankle injury he suffered against Southampton on July 13 and will be available for Saturday.

“Luke is looking really good in training,” confirmed Solskjaer. “He’s come back looking strong and will play in the friendly against Villa.”
