An ex-Red Devils star considered by many as the club’s best-ever left-back explains why the Englishman is currently the best in the position.

Manchester United legend Denis Irwin has acknowledged Luke Shaw’s upturn in form.

Shaw has firmly established himself as a regular under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this season, making 25 appearances across all competitions.

The 25-year-old, having undergone a remarkable resurgence, has been one of the best and most consistent performers in recent months.

He put in a top-notch display in United’s 9-0 thumping of Southampton on Tuesday, setting up two goals in the landslide victory.

It was not too long ago when the England international appeared to be losing favor at Old Trafford, but currently, he is enjoying his best season ever since joining the club in 2014.

And Irwin believes Alex Telles‘ arrival from FC Porto last summer has a lot to do for Shaw rediscovering his best form.

“Alex Telles coming in has probably pushed him and he’s been really top class in the last couple of months,” Irwin told the club’s official website.

“His overlapping is there to see, his defending is there to see. It’s good that he’s got competition. Certainly, at the moment, as things stand, he is the best left-back in the league.

“He offers pace, we know that, and we know he’s a good footballer and our best left-back when everything is going in well. He’s joining in the play, and his set-pieces are a plus as well.

“He’s in the position, he’s got hold of the full-back position, you can’t say the no.3 shirt any more, and he’s got to remain there.

“He knows he has got to play well as Alex Telles will be after that position.”
