Despite Manchester United holding talks with Erik ten Hag recently, Rio Ferdinand thinks the club should try to sign Thomas Tuchel instead.

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel is ‘the one’ for Manchester United, according to Rio Ferdinand.

The Red Devils have begun interviewing candidates to replace Ralf Rangnick as their new permanent coach. They held talks with Ajax manager Erik ten Hag last week. PSG boss Mauricio Pochettino, Spain manager Luis Enrique, and Sevilla coach Julen Lopetegui are on the shortlist as well.

Reports have also linked Tuchel with the manager’s job at Old Trafford after Chelsea’s future was plunged into doubt following the UK’s decision to sanction club owner Roman Abramovich – a move that many fans and former players have backed.

‘Tuchel has got the pedigree’

Now Ferdinand has explained exactly why it should be a no-brainer for United to go after Chelsea’s manager.

“I’m taking Tuchel, I don’t care,” the former Red Devils defender said on Vibe with Five.

“If roles were reversed and Man Utd were there and we had Tuchel as a sitting duck at our football club, presuming that he is a sitting duck from the reports that we’re hearing, there is a chance you could get him.

“If that was the case and the roles were reversed, trust me, Roman [Abramovich] and the empire would be knocking down the door. In fact, they wouldn’t have even knocked down the door; they would have gone round the side and just took him.

“Tuchel would be the one because he has shown that he has got the pedigree. He has shown already that he can come into this league, adapted straight away, won the Champions League, he can galvanize a squad, get them playing, create a culture, create togetherness and he has got discipline.”

United return to action this Saturday for a Premier League match against Leicester City after the international break.
