LaLiga’s opening game of the 2020/21 campaign between Granada and Athletic Club is in doubt, with the RFEF ruling it cannot take place.

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and LaLiga have been at loggerheads with each other over whether league fixtures can take place on Friday and Monday nights.

LaLiga may be all for it, but the RFEF is dead set against the idea. Therefore, Granada and Athletic Club remain in doubt on whether their season opener at the Carmenes stadium will take place on Friday night, as originally scheduled.

Monday night’s fixture between Deportivo Alaves and Real Betis at the Mendizorrotza Stadium is also under threat.

A recent court ruling in Spain ruled that LaLiga must discuss holding matches on Friday and Mondays with the RFEF.

The Spanish league officials planned to host fixtures on those nights after the RFEF granted them permission to do so for the disrupted 2019/20 campaign. It appears, though, they won’t have their way right now.

According to Marca, the two bodies met last Sunday to discuss the issue yet couldn’t agree. Thus, there’s a chance Friday’s game will have to be rescheduled for a later date.

The RFEF is reluctant to go ahead with Friday and Monday night matches mainly for the effect it may have on attending supporters. All fixtures in Spain, however, will remain behind closed doors for the meantime.

This twist of events means the two bodies could be back in court on October 6 to settle the issue. However, LaLiga officials hope an interim measure can be swung in their favor for now.

The Spanish league maintains that the current schedule will go ahead as planned despite informing clubs that a ruling by magistrate Andres Sanchez Magro means Friday and Monday games cannot proceed without a prior agreement with the RFEF.
