The former Blues star will not be able to play against his former team in the upcoming Champions League tie.

Since leaving Chelsea in 2019, Eden Hazard has seen his career coming under the crushing influence of back-to-back injuries. Having failed to regain his best form, the Belgian star rarely starts for the Blancos even when he is fully fit.

Belgium boss Roberto Martinez refused to call up Hazard for his team’s upcoming fixtures this month. Real Madrid have now confirmed the 31-year-old will undergo ankle surgery in the coming days.

Their statement reads: “In the coming days, our player, Eden Hazard, will undergo surgery to remove the osteosynthesis plate in his right fibula.”

Hazard will most likely spend around four to five weeks on the sidelines after the operation. The Belgian star will miss his side’s upcoming Champions League tie against Chelsea. The new development means Vinicius Junior can continue his undisputed presence in Blancos’ lineup.

Down the other flank, Carlo Ancelotti has preferred to use Rodrygo and Marco Asensio. Hazard’s absence will not cause serious problems for the Italian manager. However, a potential form revival after the surgery might provide Belgium with a chance to use the experienced star as part of their squad for the World Cup.
