Sergio Ramos has equaled Gianluigi Buffon’s European appearance record to hit yet another milestone in his glittering career.

Wednesday night might not have gone according to the script for Spain but it marked a special occasion for their captain.

Sergio Ramos came on as an 85th-minute substitute in the 1-1 draw with the Netherlands at Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam, making his 176th appearance for La Roja.

The Real Madrid center-back, along with Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, is now the most capped player for a European nation.

“Sergio is unique. He is on a different level,” Spain boss Luis Enrique said of the team’s skipper after his landmark appearance, via AS. “The appearance record is only within the reach of those who are very gifted.”

The 34-year old also moved up to eight in worldwide appearance rakings in international football. Egypt’s Ahmed Hassan leads that list with 184 caps to his name.

Ramos will have the chance to level with fifth-placed Mexican Claudio Suarez in that list as well as move ahead of Buffon as the most capped player for a European nation when Spain take on Switzerland in the Nations League on Saturday.
