The Red Devils boss expressed his sorrow for the Portuguese star ahead of his side’s match against Liverpool.

Ralf Rangnick says the whole of Manchester United is behind Cristiano Ronaldo after the death of his baby son.

The 37-year-old announced his newborn son had passed away on Monday. He and his partner Georgina Rodriguez were expecting twins, with their baby daughter surviving the tragedy.

Ronaldo was not in United’s squad for their match against Liverpool on Tuesday as he stayed with his family.

In an interview before the game, United manager Ralf Rangnick sent a message of support to Ronaldo and his family.

“This is the worst thing that can happen. I’m the father of two sons myself, so I’m fully aware what that means,” Rangnick told Sky Sports.

“We’re all behind him. We’re all with him. We wish that him and his family are strong together.”

He added: “It shows there are more important things in life than football. The whole club is with him. For me, it was clear that he was to be where he is now – with his family.”

United and Liverpool fans applauded Ronaldo in the seventh minute of the North-West derby to pay tribute to the Portuguese superstar.

It remains to be seen whether the 37-year-old will return to the Red Devils squad for their match against Arsenal on Saturday.
