The Pole may have missed out on a maiden Ballon d’Or, but his fellow countrymen remain proud and convinced of his status as the world’s best player.

A Polish town named Wieliczka plans to give Robert Lewandowski a ball of salt as a consolation for not winning the Ballon d’Or.

Wieliczka, a Southern municipality near Krakow, is renowned for salt mining. It has one of the world’s oldest salt mines, dating back to the 13th century, with a population of approximately 23,395.

The citizens of Wieliczka, like the rest of Poland, were left disappointed to see Lewandowski end up second behind Lionel Messi in the 2021 Ballon d’Or rankings.

City councilor Kamil Jastrzebski, however, has proposed a unique way to right the ‘great deal of injustice’ the Bayern Munich striker has suffered.

“There has been a great deal of injustice, and Robert Lewandowski has become its victim,” he posted on Twitter. “Therefore – as a member of Wieliczka – I propose that the city symbolically announces that Lewy is the best footballer in the world.

“Wieliczka will actually do something that a few dozen hours ago was supposed to be just a joke to improve the mood, that is, it will symbolically recognize Lewandowski as the number one player in the world.

“There was also a proposal to expand my idea. Some people want to give the captain of our team a Salt Ball. In the past, salt was called ‘white gold’, so it also has a historical and geographical basis. I think that despite inflation and the general crisis, Wieliczka will be able to get enough salt.”
