Napoli striker Victor Osimhen might return to action sooner than initially expected.

Victor Osimhen suffered a nasty face injury during Napoli’s 3-2 defeat against Inter on November 21. The Nigerian star received lengthy on-field treatment before limping off the field.

Osimhen underwent several tests in the following week. The results showed he had suffered an orbital fracture and also broke his cheekbone. Several sources claimed the striker would be out of action for three months, missing the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations.

However, the Napoli star returned to training only three weeks after his “complicated but successful face surgery”. The 22-year-old is yet to participate in team training. However, the latest development is a major boost for the Super Eagles ahead of the next year’s AFCON tournament.

Osimhen announced his return to training with a post on his Twitter account.

Napoli has not published a new statement on Osimhen’s recovery process and whether he will be back sooner than expected.

However, Nigeria can hope to have their star striker back in time for the tournament. Even having him for the later stages of the AFCONs will be a big squad boost for the Super Eagles.

The absence of Osimhen has affected Napoli’s performances in their recent games. Luciano Spalletti’s side has won only one of their last four games without their go-to striker. They have also slipped to third place on the Serie A table, two points behind leaders AC Milan.
