Mourinho got Kane onside at Tottenham by promising to turn the striker into a football movie star when he became the club’s manager.

Harry Kane had a good relationship with Jose Mourinho’s predecessor, Mauricio Pochettino, and was understandably sorry to see the Argentine leave Tottenham in November 2019.

After a dreadful start to last season, however, club chairman Daniel Levy felt a change in the dugout was required. Therefore, he replaced Pochettino with Mourinho.

The former Chelsea and Manchester United boss, who had been out of work for almost a year, turned things around by leading Spurs to a respectable sixth-place finish in the Premier League table.

But Mourinho’s appointment last year wasn’t without controversy, and he knew getting Spurs’ main man on board was critical.

Now the details of how the ‘Special One’ lured Kane to his side have been revealed on Amazon’s ‘All or Nothing’ documentary.

“I believe that you have a very good relationship with Mauricio, I love that,” Mourinho told Kane as quoted on Goal.

“I always think, good relationship with the previous manager. Why not me?

“I saw you training yesterday and I have no doubts that you are a leader. That is my feeling. The world looks to English football with an incredible respect but they still think that the movie stars of football belong to other places. We have to build also your status in that direction.

“My profile, I am little bit like that as a coach. The reality is that my dimension is universal and by being with me I think I can help you to [explode],” the manager concluded with a hand gesture.

In response to Mourinho’s speech, Kane replied: “That’s my aim.

“When you’re at a club like Tottenham, of course we’ve done well and personally I’ve done well – but I want to be Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.”

Mourinho continued: “What I don’t accept, because it is my f*cking nature, to be here and win nothing, but I feel that we can because of you. You have better players than I had at Manchester United. The club has a lot [of potential] to explode.”

Kane has already scored 14 goals in 19 games under Mourinho and will look to add to that tally in the new season.
