Man United pair Raphael Varane and Harry Maguire received widespread criticism for their performance against Newcastle.

Newcastle held Manchester United to a draw in their Premier League game on Monday. The Red Devils slipped to seventh place on the table, receiving criticism for their uninspiring performance.

United were playing their first game in 16 days due to the recent Covid outbreak at the club. However, their performance was still far from convincing, given that they were playing against the worst defence of the league.

Newcastle had decent chances of winning the game due to several mistakes from United defenders. However, David De Gea prevented them with his incredible performance.

Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane received more criticism after the game. But, Ralf Rangnick believed the observers were being unfair to the United due.

“Raphael has not played for the last five or six weeks,” Rangnick said (via Metro).

“Even before the Tottenham game he was injured, so in the last three months he hasn’t played that many games.

“Yes, he made a mistake before the first goal we conceded but apart from that I think he was okay. I wouldn’t say he was outstanding, the same with Harry [Maguire], but he did okay.

“Our problem was that we allowed too many transitional moments. This is not only a problem of the centre-backs, it is a problem of the whole team. It starts up front, the role of the number 10s in that kind of formation.

“I don’t think it makes sense today to speak about the individual performance of players. We need to get better as a team.”

United will face Burnley in their next league game on Thursday. The Red Devils will then host Wolves four days later.
