Ronaldo missed the chance to give United the lead after missing a penalty during their FA Cup clash with Middlesbrough.

Cristiano Ronaldo missed a golden opportunity to give Manchester United the lead during their FA Cup clash with Middlesbrough on Friday.

Paul Pogba was brought down by Anfernee Dijksteel in the 20th minute and Ronaldo was offered the chance to give the Red Devils an early lead in the game.

However, the usually reliable 36-year-old scuffed his penalty wide of the post, leaving United fans and Roy Keane shocked.

Keane, who was in the ITV studio alongside Ian Wright said: “Obviously, the biggest shock is Ronaldo.

Can we criticise him? Of course we can, he’s got to hit the target.”

Wright added: “You’re not expecting him to miss the whole target. I think he’s tried to be very precise I think, especially with the way the goalie’s started.

“You just want to get that on target. That was a massive shock.”

A number of fans took to social media to express their disbelief at the club’s talisman missing what should have been a definite goal.

At the time of writing, United and Middlesbrough are tied 1-1 at half-time of extra-time.
