The Reds failed to control Man Utd forwards during their unexpected defeat at Old Trafford.

Former Liverpool star Dean Saunders has criticized Trent Alexander-Arnold for his performance against Manchester United.

Alexander-Arnold has come under fire for his recent displays, with some observers even suggesting his place in England’s starting lineup is in danger ahead of the upcoming 2022 World Cup.

The Liverpool defender failed to prevent Anthony Elanga from sending a precise assist for Jadon Sancho on Man Utd’s first goal.

However, Saunders believes the latest North West derby isn’t Alexander-Arnold’s only poor defensive display.

Speaking to TalkSport, he said: “It’s a bad start and some poor defending from Trent and [Joe] Gomez.

“Trent for the first goal gets 1-2’d. Don’t get me wrong, going forward he’s world class but defensively he’s getting found out.

“Mitrovic came over the top of him at Fulham. Vinicius Junior in the Champions League final does him at the back post.

“He gave the ball away for the goal against Palace and last night he jogs out to Elanga, gets 1-2’d and then walks. If Trent keeps running he gets his foot in when Sancho chops inside.

“The second goal he hits a diagonal into the box, loses it and doesn’t sprint back and Gomez is left in the channel stranded.”

Liverpool will look to claim their first victory of the new season when they meet Bournemouth at Anfield next weekend.
