Despite claims that no European club came in for Ronaldo in the summer, Marseille have said otherwise.

Marseille sports coordinator Basile Boli claims the Ligue 1 club held transfer talks with Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer.

Ronaldo, who left Manchester United last month, is now a free agent ahead of the January transfer window. The forward reportedly has a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr on the table. However, at this stage, he has made no indication of which club he’ll join next.

“Cristiano Ronaldo was in talks with Olympique [Marseille], I think he should have come,” Boli told NW Sport.

“He is a talented player, even if he is a bit old, I think that in the French championship he still has something to give. We saw that, for [Lionel] Messi, it didn’t work out in the first year and then in the second year he proved he was number one.”

Ronaldo endured a tough start to the season prior to his Manchester United exit, making just four Premier League starts under Erik ten Hag and scoring three goals in 16 games across all competitions.

That said, the 37-year-old scored 24 goals in all club tournaments last season and finished as the English league’s third-highest scorer with 18 goals.
