After scoring the first goal for his side against Freiburg, Robert Lewandowski took a step into the Bayern Munich history books.

Anyone could easily argue that Robert Lewandowski has been unstoppable this season and surely deserves an individual award. The Polish great just scored his 40th Bundesliga goal for Bayern Munich during the domestic game against Freiburg. As referred to as one of the finest strikers in the world, he has once again proved beneficial for the Bavarians as they grabbed their ninth successive title victory.

Scoring 40 goals in a single season is no joke and only the best are able to go beyond this mark. In fact, Lewandowski now becomes the second person to reach this milestone alongside Bayern legend Gerd Muller. During the 1971-72 campaign, this World Cup winner registered 40 strikes to his name while playing for the Bavarian giants. If you did not know, Muller is the all-time leading goalscorer for Bayern with 565 goals across 15 magnificent years.

History in writing!

At the age of 32, Lewandowski is not taking no for an answer. The Poland international has accounted for 45 goals across all competitions this season so far, with 55 coming from the last. He is most certainly competing for that top spot in the Bayern history books with one step already in it. That being said, he definitely carries respect for his predecessors and acknowledges the efforts behind this difficult task.

After netting his 40th goal, Robert lifted his shirt in celebration with Muller’s face underneath. Lewandowski has been regarded as one of the best transfers for Bayern when he moved as a free agent from Borussia Dortmund back in 2014. The attacker is closing in on the 300-goal mark and will most probably jump that wall next season. It would be interesting to see if he continues his career at Allianz Arena with quite a few speculations regarding his future.
