The Bayern Munich striker says his comments over Messi’s Ballon d’Or speech were misinterpreted.

Lionel Messi defeated Robert Lewandowski in a close race to win the seventh Ballon d’Or award last week. The final rankings of the prize were controversial, with several footballing figures publicly criticizing the selections.

Lewandowski was the number one favourite to win the prize last year. However, France Football cancelled the awards amid COVID-19 concerns.

Upon receiving the award, Messi paid tribute to Lewandowski in his speech. The Argentine icon said the organizers must give the 2020 award to the Bayern star.

Where it started

In an interview with Polish outlet Kanal Sportowy, Lewandowski spoke about the Ballon d’Or race.

“I felt sadness. I can’t deny it.

“Can’t say I was happy, on the contrary. I have a feeling of sadness.

“To be so close, to compete with Messi, of course I respect how he plays and what he has achieved. The mere fact that I was able to compete with him shows me the level that I was able to reach.”

Asked about Messi’s comments, the 33-year-old said: “I’m not that enthusiastic about getting the 2020 award.

“I would like it [Messi’s statement] to be a sincere and courteous statement from a great player and not just empty words.”

Lewandowski clarifies his comments

The comments were interoperated as Lewandowski meant to question the sincerity of Messi’s speech. However, the Bayern Munich striker dismissed these claims hours after the publishing of the former interview.

“I never say that Lionel Messi’s words were not sincere,” Lewandowski told Kicker (via Daily Mail).

“On the contrary: Lionel Messi’s speech at the event in Paris, in which he expressed that, in his opinion, I deserved the Ballon d’Or 2020, really touched me and made me happy.

“With my statement, I just wanted to express that I would of course be very happy if Messi’s words were heard.

“I respect and appreciate Lionel Messi beyond measure and once again congratulate him on winning the Ballon d’Or 2021.”

Lewandowski and his teammates will face Messi’s former club Barcelona on Wednesday.

The Bavarians are already qualified for the next round. However, Barcelona need to win the game in Allianz Arena to secure their qualification to the knock-out stage.
