The Blues striker has failed to score in his last 11 appearances across all competitions for the club.

The ‘only way’ Timo Werner can end his goal drought is by working hard in training and constantly practicing his finishing, says Frank Lampard.

The former RB Leipzig frontman last scored for Chelsea in a 4-1 win over Sheffield United on November 7 – exactly 11 games ago in all competitions. This alarming dip in form has naturally raised concerns.

Lampard dropped Werner to the bench in the club’s 1-1 draw with Aston Villa on Monday, deploying him as a second-half substitute for goalscorer Olivier Giroud instead in the 72nd-minute.

But the German was unable to find a match-winner and now faces another challenging test against Manchester City, who boast the Premier League’s best defensive record on only 12 conceded goals in 14 games, on Sunday.

“Every player goes through tough times in front of goal and I always found that work at the training ground was the only way to turn that,” said Lampard in his pre-match conference on Saturday afternoon.

“It’s about simple work, repetition of finishing, which Timo is doing now, and when you work like that, then it’s a matter of time.

“His natural attributes will get him in front of goal, get him away from defenders, and get him those chances again. The beauty is that he’s been getting chances because that’s definitely a positive.

“If his confidence is low from missing a couple, that’s only natural and it’s my job to help push him in a positive direction. I feel the goals will come.”

Lampard also gave an update on Hakim Ziyech’s recovery from a hamstring injury ahead of the City match.
