A spectacular start to the season has seen Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema claim an early lead in La Liga’s goal and assists charts.

Karim Benzema appears to have taken over Lionel Messi’s mantle as the star of La Liga by embarking on a superb start to the season.

The France international scored a hat-trick on Sunday to ensure Real Madrid’s return to the Santiago Bernabeu ended on a triumphant note by beating Celta Vigo 5-2. He also chipped in an assist for Vinicius Junior’s goal.

Therefore, Benzema has become the stand-alone leader in the Pichichi battle. His five goals in only four games is one better than Real Sociedad’s Mikel Oyarzabal and Real Madrid teammate Vinicius.

But Benzema isn’t just finishing moves, he is setting them up as well. The 33-year-old’s assist for Vinicius on Sunday was his fourth of the season. So, out of Real Madrid’s 13 La Liga goals, he has been directly involved in nine of them.

What about the league standings?

So far, so good for Real Madrid in Carlo Ancelotti’s second spell as manager. Los Blancos have won three of their opening four games to collect 10 points out of a possible 12. They lead La Liga ahead of Valencia and reigning champions Atletico Madrid, who are also on 10 points, on goal difference.

Sevilla and Barcelona, who had their match on Saturday postponed, remain three points behind Real Madrid for now.
