Liverpool have already lost Virgil van Dijk for an extended period, and are now dealing with the possibility of losing Joel Matip.

Video footage recently emerged on social media showing Liverpool defender Joel Matip visiting a local hospital after Saturday’s Merseyside derby.

It was then confirmed by The Times that Matip underwent a scan after picking up a knock.

The 29-year old made his return to action in the match against Everton having missed the start to his side’s season due to a muscular problem. He stayed on the full 90 minutes, having last played the full length of a competitive fixture in October 2019.

Fortunately, no major issue was detected by the scan. However, if his injury record is anything to go by, he still remains a doubt for Liverpool’s upcoming game.

Jurgen Klopp must now make a crucial decision of whether or not to play the Cameroonian center-back in the Champions League group stage opener against Ajax.

Should Matip be dropped, Klopp will most probably pair up Fabinho and Joe Gomez in the backline as Virgil van Dijk will also remain unavailable after suffering a potentially season-ending injury.

Other options for the back-four for Klopp includes youngsters Nathaniel Phillips, Rhys Williams, Sepp van den Berg, and Billy Koumetio.
