After the news of Josep Maria Bartomeu’s arrest broke, Joan Gaspart wanted to offer his opinion on the matter through Radio Marca.

FC Barcelona is currently going through a major scandal after Josep Maria Bartomeu and another four board members of his presidency were arrested. Former president Joan Gaspart is convinced Bartomeu did nothing wrong and he should be released soon. However, the evidence suggests that any wrongdoing is completely possible from the former Barcelona chairman. Gaspart also has a controversial past as a Blaugrana president and his defense of Bartomeu doesn’t come as a surprise.

The reason he got arrested is due to the accusations of paying up to six times above market value for a service that protected his public image. During the famous Barçagate scandal, Bartomeu hired companies that rooted in his favor and smeared several FC Barcelona players in the process. The act itself is not a crime but the way it was conducted might be. As of right now, the case is under investigation and a decision will be made in the coming weeks.

Gaspart thinks Bartomeu did nothing wrong.

“I’m sure Bartomeu isn’t concerned by this because he hasn’t done anything wrong,” Gaspart explained in an interview with Radio MARCA. “When you have a clear conscience, you can listen to what the police ask you, tell the truth and hope you get to go home. I’m convinced, as his friend, that he has done nothing wrong. I’m not concerned or interested in these subjects, that is why I haven’t expanded my knowledge of it. I know the same as you do, I read about it and hope it gets cleared up.

“I don’t call people to ask what happened, it’s not my style. I just hope everything clears up as soon as possible, nothing more. I don’t follow these judicial issues from the rest of the clubs in Spain. A few days ago, I saw economic issues from other clubs. Over time it always ends up showing that things related to Barcelona are unfounded, just as was the case when people went after Sandro Rosell.”
