Gli Azzurri missed a big chance to go level on points with the league leaders, and the manager suggests his team lacks the right mentality.

Napoli succumbed to a 3-1 defeat at the hands of AC Milan in Sunday night’s crunch Serie A fixture at Stadio San Paolo.

Milan were missing head coach Stefano Pioli along with other backroom staff members due to coronavirus, but Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Jens Petter Hauge made sure to get the job done and keep the team’s unbeaten league streak intact.

Gennaro Gattuso’s men slipped to sixth place in the standings after their third successive home defeat.

With six points adrift of league leaders, they are increasingly losing ground to Milan in the race for this season’s Scudetto.

Speaking after the match, Gattuso insisted that his side have enough quality but they lack the right mentality and tenacity – and these are the things they need to work on improving.

“We did it all ourselves, as we created chances, created their chances for them,” Gattuso told Sky Sport Italia.

“We think too much about what’s missing, what we don’t do, what went against us. It’s not bad luck. It’s that we don’t approach these games with the right determination, because technique and quality aren’t enough.

“It’s not that we are relaxed, it’s a mentality and it has been going for a long time. Quality is not enough in football, we need to focus and fight for every result.”
