Chelsea’s record-signing Kai Havertz has ‘not convinced’ a certain Frank Leboeuf, who also weighed in on the club’s defensive problems.

Havertz was on target against Southampton on Saturday to take his account for Chelsea up to four goals in six games in all competitions.

But the former Bayer Leverkusen star, who arrived in the summer for a club-record €80m, made a costly error that allowed Danny Ings to peg one back for the Saints prior to the break.

While fellow new boy Timo Werner found the back of the net twice himself, Che Adams and Jannik Vestergaard ensured Southampton left Stamford Bridge with a share of spoils in a 3-3 draw.

Despite Havertz bagging his first Premier League goal in the match, however, Leboeuf expressed doubts over the German’s capabilities.

“I’m not convinced about Havertz, I’m not that optimistic,” the former Blues defender told ESPN.

Although Leboeuf wasn’t so downbeat over Werner by saying: “I’m very pleased with Werner, he’s a real satisfaction.”

Saturday’s draw, however, left Chelsea with just two wins from their opening five games this term and down in seventh in the standings.

The biggest takeaway from the Southampton game was the club’s ongoing defensive issues despite their summer signings. Not only did they conceded three goals, but a lack of communication between Kurt Zouma and Kepa Arrizabalaga led to Adams’ goal.

But in Thiago Silva, lies the answer to Chelsea’s problems.

“Thiago Silva should have been back because it’s crucial for Chelsea to have a real leader at the back and that’s the main problem,” added Leboeuf.

“They all have to work hard physically to make sure they can play together and be stronger together.”
