This season has been a tough campaign due to the ban on fans attending matches making for strange atmospheres at games.

Safety concerns have been paramount due to the spread of Coronavirus throughout Europe. This has resulted in some serious battles between teams this year, as they wrestle to grab the league trophy from the grasp of others.

As the season comes to a climax, interest reaches a fever pitch for football fans around the world as leagues and competitions come to a nail-biting finish. Pre-season bets on team winners or top scorers are on the verge of being collected or torn up if they lose.

Some fans like to add an extra level of fan engagement by placing bets on European football. This can be named the overall champions, correct score in a match, or betting on the top 10 leaders in the race to win the Golden Shoe.

While most leagues have seen the same familiar faces returning to the top, there has been the odd surprise thrown in. At the time of writing, the champions of some leagues have still been undecided.

The German Bundesliga

In Germany, football paints a familiar picture as Bayern Munich have marched on relentlessly towards their ninth league title in a row, after overcoming problems at the start of the season. Star players with plenty of title-winning experience have again proved the difference between Bayern and the other sides. The announcement that highly-rated Julian Nagelsmann of Red Bull Leipzig would become their manager from next season struck fear into their closest challengers.

Yet, Bayern hasn’t had it all their own way this year. RB Leipzig have battled admirably to be the best of the rest. Despite the upcoming departure of their manager, they still have a very strong squad and the feeling is there they can snatch the crown next season from Bayern. And Borussia Dortmund, the last team other than Bayern to taste Bundesliga’s success will surely be a lot closer. With a world-class striker in Erling Haaland, Dortmund could prove to be a wise bet for next year.

La Liga of Spain

The Spanish league, while not being settled at the time of writing, sees familiar foes doing battle at the top. Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid, and Barcelona vie for the biggest prize in Spanish football. You have to go back as far as 2004 when Valencia were crowned champions, to find a team outside this trio claiming La Liga.

As such, odds between these three are close and it’s tough to call a winner. Maybe it is easier to have a bet on top scorer, with Lionel Messi of Barcelona rarely failing to disappoint. Karim Benzema is scoring well too but perhaps his off-field problems will prove too distracting. Messi, winner for the last four years in a row and currently at the top of the list this year could be a safe bet.

The English Premier League

Manchester City have taken advantage of Liverpool’s complete collapse as champions and Manchester Utd’s inconsistency to claim another title. Also victims to a rocky start, they strung together a sequence of dazzling attacking performances in tandem with a mean defence that had punters cashing in on their results.

Manchester Utd will feel they can catch them next year and finally reclaim the trophy they have won a record 20 times. Previous title winners Liverpool and Chelsea will also be pushing hard for glory. And the team which produced the ultimate bet in football, 5000/1 Premier League winners in 2016, Leicester City appear to be on the rise again due to the astute management of Brendan Rodgers. Indeed, some fans thought lightning could strike twice with Leicester winning again the year after.

French Ligue 1

Currently undecided, the French league has seen a close entertaining battle this year. Paris St. Germain, whose stranglehold on the title has only slipped once since 2013, to Monaco in 2017, see their position under threat once again. Surprisingly, quite a few teams in this league seem capable of providing a challenge, yet most fade away due to injuries or loss of form once the pressure is on.

While PSG usually come out on top, a variety of teams litter the second and third place positions of previous years. If you choose your bet carefully, you may be rewarded with an outside winner. Bets such as to win without PSG or top 3 finish can offer a decent alternative if you feel your choice will be there or thereabouts.

Italian Serie A

There were new faces at the top of the table in Italy as Inter Milan claimed their first championship in 11 years with games to spare. This halted the dominant period of Juventus, who had won the previous nine titles in a row. The fact that the current Inter manager is Antonio Conte, a successful manager with Juve in the past has not go down well with the Turin-based club’s fans.

There is no doubt Juve will be back competing hard next season, along with a resurgent AC Milan and the ever-improving side of Atalanta. These sides have been locked in a battle to finish the best of the rest and have the confidence and belief of being title challengers next time around. Although Atalanta are certainly not fancied as favorites, bettors have seen stranger things happening.
