The Moroccan made a surprise switch from Santiago Bernabeu to San Siro last year after developing into of the world’s best fullbacks.

Achraf Hakimi was persuaded to join Inter Milan after hearing about the “ambition of the project” in his first phone call with manager Antonio Conte.

Real Madrid‘s decision to let go of a promising player who had already established himself into one of the best in the business in his position came was not welcomed by a large section of their fanbase. It started to look even poor decision-making on Real Madrid’s part when the 22-year-old quickly became a mainstay in the Inter Milan team.

The full-back has been one of Inter’s most crucial players in their title-winning campaign, contributing seven goals and nine assists.

“I was convinced by the ambition of the project at this club and Conte’s words in our first phone call,” Hakimi told Sportweek.

“He called to ask what I wanted from my future, then explained how we would play and my decisive role in his aggressive style of football, as the fifth man between defence and midfield.

“Then, he said we would win. We talked a lot and, seeing how things went, I can say that I made the right choice. I knew that straight away.”
