The Red Devils have already suffered their worst start to a league season in 101 years, so what would happen if they sold CR7?

Gary Neville reckons a bottom-half-of-the-table finish in the Premier League would await Manchester United if Cristiano Ronaldo leaves Old Trafford.

Ronaldo’s future remains under serious doubt ahead of the final weeks of the summer transfer window. The forward reportedly wants to join a Champions League club. United refuse to sell, but CR7’s agent, Jorge Mendes, is still searching for a new club behind the scenes.

Losing Ronaldo, of course, would cost United a proven goalscoring striker, and given how Erik ten Hag’s side have lost both of their Premier League games so far this season, Neville thinks his former teammate’s possible departure would damage the team’s prospects.

“The problem they have now is if they lose him, there’s nothing left in terms of the goal-scoring part of the pitch,” the ex-United defender told Sky Sports.

‘’I genuinely think if they don’t bring players in or if they bring poor players in and he leaves, I genuinely think they can finish in the bottom half of the table.

“I think that is a bottom-half-of-the-table team. That is a massive statement that may look stupid at the end of the season.

“They are demoralized and shot to pieces. It is really bad in there. They have gone back to default.”

Ronaldo and United return to action next Monday for a Premier League match against Liverpool in Manchester.
