The Catalans have expanded their presence in the crypto market by launching their first NFT.

Barcelona sold their first Non-Fungible Token (NFT) at a Sotheby’s action on Saturday.

A bidder paid €678k to purchase a 40-second animation of Johan Cruyff’s iconic goal against Atletico Madrid in 1973.

According to ESPN, Barca’s partners, BCN Visuals, have spent 10,000 hours making the animation.

‘FC Barcelona: In a Way, Immortal’ marks Barca’s entrance to the NFT world as they embrace the opportunity for a new revenue source.

Purchasing the NFT comes with special perks for the buyer. The ‘digital ambassador’ will have permission to visit La Masia while enjoying a minimum of five years of hospitality at Camp Nou.

The sale took place in New York ahead of Barcelona’s last pre-season match against New York Red Bulls.

“The NFT will be forever linked to my father’s legacy,” said Cruyff’s son Jordi, who works as a sporting advisor at the club.

“He would have been fascinated to see that one of his most beautiful goals with Barca has been the inspiration to create this unique piece of digital art that we hope will be enjoyed, admired and remembered forever.”

Barcelona have confirmed the unveiled NFT will be the first in a series of tokens that will “celebrate iconic moments” in the La Liga club’s history.
