The five-time Ballon d’Or winner left the Premier League club at the end of last month by mutual agreement.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has said the club need to sign a replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo in January, but will only move for the right player.

Going into the winter transfer window, reinforcing the frontline is a priority for Ten Hag. Scoring goals has been a weak area for United all season. The Red Devils rank 10th in the Premier League for goals scored, having found the back of the net 20 times. Their top-scorer is Marcus Rashford with four goals.

“There are two things. First, goals can also come out of our own club; see [Alejandro] Garnacho, see [Anthony] Elanga, see [Facundo] Pellistri, who made a good impression in the World Cup and in the game against Everton last week in training. That is first,” Ten Hag said in a press conference.

“We are aware we lost a striker [Ronaldo], so I think we have to get a striker in, but it has to be the right one.

“The right one will bring quality to the team and not just be an addition to the squad, because that only gives you problems. You know the criteria is high at Manchester United.”

Ronaldo and United mutually parted ways last month following the footballer’s controversial interview with Piers Morgan on TalkTV, where he criticized the club and Ten Hag.

The Portugal captain was United’s top-scorer last season with 24 goals across all competitions.

The Red Devils begin life without Ronaldo in the Premier League on Tuesday at home to Nottingham Forest. For betting tips and stats, check out our preview here on Ace Football.
